UNPR is to merge with PMP, the party led by former president Traian Basescu.
The PMP leader said on Tuesday: “We have finalized the negotiations that lasted two weeks, a merger process bringing together the People’s Movement (PMP – our note) and UNPR. The merger will take place on a Wednesday. Next week on Wednesday we will hold the merger congresses. The new party will be named People’s Movement Party (PMP), the party’s anthem will remain the PMP’s one.”
PMP President Traian Basescu and UNPR leader Valeriu Steriu have had a press conference on Tuesday, announcing the merger. Each party will hold two first Vice-presidents and an executive president, Basescu said, hotnews.ro informs.
“Several UNPR MPs have left for PSD. We don’t mind. Most of the MPs (the remaining ones – our note) do not have PSD as an option,” Basescu also said.
In his turn, Valeriu Steriu said: “I believe there are a lot of Romanians who want something else than PSD and PNL, we can offer an alternative. We believe we have a good project ahead.”
Asked about the UNPR members’ legal problems and honourableness, Traian Basescu said: “Point me to one who is without honour. Gabriel Oprea is no more here. Serban Mihailescu has resigned from the party; I see no problem in this merger.”
UNPR senator Constantin Popa said that the UNPR executive bureau has overwhelmingly voted the merger with PMP, the two parties are to run in elections together.
“The merger was voted by majority of votes. We’ll run together with PMP in general elections,” Popa said.
