Update: British Ambassador Paul Brummell, talks with Justice Minister on human trafficking, Brexit and justice laws

British Ambassador to Romania, Paul Brummell, had talks on Wednesday at the Ministry of Justice with Justice Minister Tudorel Toader.

The meeting between Brummell and Toader was not officially announced by the Ministry of Justice or by the Embassy. The British diplomat arrived at the Ministry of Justice at 10:00h.

The British Ambassador said, at the end of the meeting, that the talks focused on three issues. The first one was regarding the bilateral cooperation between the UK and Romania in the field of civil justice and on the further cooperation in the fight against human trafficking.

The Brexit was the second issue on the agenda. The British envoy said that, after leaving the EU structures, London aims further cooperation in civil justice with all EU countries, including Romania. The British government has released a document which includes proposals on the future cooperation, tvr.ro informs.

The third issue on the agenda was related to the amendments to the judicial system proposed by the Justice Minister. Ambassador Brummel said it is Romania’s responsibility to decide on its own legal framework, according to the constitution and the parliamentary procedures, and on the suitable system.

He added that the UK appreciates Romania’s achievements last year in regard to the fight against corruption and in favour of the rule of law. The ambassador stressed that Romania has institutions, such as the DNA, with very good activity, adding that changes should be made following discussions with the people involved.

Ambassador Brummel underscored that he would wish the amendments aim the strengthening of the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

Asked about UK’s recommendations to Romania, the British envoy said what is important is not such recommendation, but that the parties involved express their points of view, build a legal framework adapted to Romania’s needs.

The ambassador said he was the one who requested a visit to the Justice Minister.

On Tuesday, Minister Tudorel Toader had a meeting with US Ambassador Hans Klemm. The meeting between the US Ambassador and the Minister of Justice lasted two hours.
