26 Romanian children separated from their families in Norway in the past 5 years

According to the Romanian ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are now seven Romanian families whose children have been taken away by the state authorities in Norway.

MAE told Digi 24 that at this moment, seven families with at least one Romanian parent are facing similar charges as Bodnariu family, with 16 children being taken over by the Norwegian child protections bodies.

In the past five years, other similar six cases have been managed, with ten children being taken away from their families. Overall, in five cases eight children have been repatriated, while in a case two children were given back to a Romanian family residing in Norway.

Later on Wednesday, MAE also informed that the Romanian ambassador to Norway, Adrian Gabriel Davidoiu, the consul Mihai Oprescu and an expert sent by MAE had met Bodnariu family and its lawyer on Tuesday. The Romanians consul will be able to visit the children as well.

Families of other nationalities had their children taken away in Norway, too. In early 2012, Norwegian caregivers took two children, a 3yo child and a 1yo one from their Indian family on the ground they were sleeping in the bed with their parents and the mother used to feed them with her hand. Months of diplomatic pressures followed between Norway and India before the case should be solved. Yet, due to the long time staying apart from his family, the 3yo boy stopped talking.

In 2011, a family from Sri Lanka also lost the two children, a boy and a girl, on the ground they used to share the same bed. The Norwegian authorities also argued the parents used to give too much chocolate to the children.

Also in 2011, the two children of a Czech family have been taken into custody by the Norwegian authorities and placed in some surrogate families. The Michalákov brothers case has been reported by kindergarten teacher who said that one of the kids would have said that their father slipped his hand into his pyjama.

A second case involving a Czech family was reported only few days ago, when a nine-month baby girl has been taken by the Barnevernet around Christmas and admitted to hospital as the child suffered some kidney malformations. The parents were accused they didn’t take care enough of the child.

In October 2014, the 5-year-old kid of a Russian family, Natalya and Sergey Shianok, never came home from school, being taken by the caregivers and placed in custody. The parents said their child had told his colleagues how he had lost one of his baby teeth while his mother undressed him of his shirt. Barnevernet’s report mentions that the mother abusively and deliberately took his tooth off.
