39 y.o. woman in serious condition at CF2 Hospital in Bucharest, following an erroneous blood transfusion

A 39 year old woman is in serious condition at the hospital in Bucharest CF 2 following an erroneous blood transfusion, sources from the Ministry of Health said on Friday.

She was to be transferred to University Hospital, the sources said, adding that the woman’s condition is ‘very grave’.

The woman underwent on Monday an oncology surgery. She suffered from cervical cancer at an early stage. 24 hours after the surgery she began having serious internal bleeding which lasted until Thursday, subsequently having pulmonary depression. All this time she was undergoing transfusions.

The woman had blood group 0, but she was given blood group AB4.

The Health Ministry confirms that the patient’s condition was aggravated due to this erroneous transfusion. The Minister of Health has started an investigation to see exactly how these transfusions occurred.

Sources with digi24.ro say the unit of CF2 Hospital performing surgery did not have operating license.

This is the second case reported in the medical system in recent months. A woman died in hospital after a wrong blood transfusion at the Hospital for Burns and an investigation discovered that the hospital’s transfusion unit was operational for more than a year without license.

A 68-year-old woman died in a hospital in Bucharest in June following a wrong blood transfusion. The Health Ministry and the Doctors’ College started an investigation in this case.

The woman was admitted to the Hospital for Burns in Bucharest and died after a blood transfusion that was not compliant with her sanguine group.

The incident occurred on June 13 and has been reported on June 27.
