40% of the households in Romania need repairs, study shows

Households in Romania are facing serious problems, ranging from severe deterioration to the lack of toilets.

According to a study by the Banks Association for the Locative Field in Romania, out of the total of 7.74 million households in Romania, 16% have serious problems, 33.4% don’t have closets, while 32% don’t have baths or showers. Another 40% of the new houses need repairs.

The same document reveals that the houses and apartments in Romania are lacking comfort, for almost half of them, 46.5% have only one or two rooms and are overcrowded. 57% of them are in the countryside.

While houses are lacking space in the big cities, the comfort is completely missing in the countryside.

“8.5% of the households in urban areas and 34% in the rural areas don’t have a toilet, while 32% of the total don’t have bathrooms or showers using running water. 16% of the houses in Romania are damaged, hosting dampness, scarce light, while the environment factors such as noise, pollution, promiscuity are experienced by 3 to 19 percent of them,” reads the ABLDR study.

At the same time, the study warns that very few Romanians intend to build, extend or revamp their household.

“Only 13% of the residing population intends to build a house, 11% to repair the house’s foundation. Only 9% people intend to buy a plot of land and 8% to extend their current house. Savings represent one third of the sources financing the planned locative investments,” the study also shows.

An IRSOP survey reveals that 580,000 families intend to revamp their houses, to buy a new one or a vacation house in the countryside, to repair the electric and sanitary equipment or the mend roofs.
