8 migrants and their guide caught while illegally crossing the border to Romania

Eight migrants from Iraq, Syria and Sri Lanka and their Serbian guide have been caught on Wednesday night while trying to illegally transit Romania, coming from Serbia. They had paid EUR 1,000 each to reach Germany.

Five refugees were from Sri Lanka, two from Iraq and one from Syria. They were caught by the border police officers from Cruceni, Timisoara who had tracked them down with the night surveillance system while walking on the field from the border to inland.

The investigations established that the group consisted of eight males and one woman, aged from 19 to 73. They were coming from Sri Lanka, Iraq, Syria and Serbia and had no ID papers. The Serbian citizen was their guide. The migrants admitted they knew him in Belgrade where they gave EUR 1,000 each to another Serbian citizen in order to help them get to Germany,” reads a press release of the Timisoara Border Police Inspectorate.

The guide was taken into custody for 24 hours while the migrant group has been presented to the Immigration Service in Timis.
