At least 13 injured in the Colectiv nightclub fire, admitted to four hospitals in Bucharest, have died due to extremely aggressive bacteria. Their medical records show this, records handed over by doctors to journalist Catalin Tolontan. The information was published on the World Health Day to pull the alarm about the conditions in Romanian hospitals, tvr.ro reports.
The Doctors from the Hospital for Burns, the Emergency University Hospital and the St. Pantelimon and St. Ioan have handed the journalists copies of the medical records of patients who died within one week of hospitalization, with generalized infection, septicaemia.
It’s about 13 more patients infected with highly aggressive bacteria, one of them had seven types of bacteria. Acinetobacter appears in several files as well as a rare form of bacteria resistant to any antibiotic.
Medical tests indicate clearly that these infections occurred in hospitals, where the bacteria come from. Most of the patients were infected with bacteria in the blood. The wounded died of septicaemia in the country or abroad.
According to a Health Ministry report released in December, after checks conduced to several units who took the injured from Colectiv, the Public Health Department found two types of bacteria at the Hospital St. Pantelimon and two at the Hospital for Burns. The same report also shows that the self checks in hospitals in December have revealed the presence of four types of germs with potential antibiotic resistance.
The families of the deceased are outraged that they don’t have access to medical information in the files. Under the legislation, the files cannot be made available even after death if the patients have not given their written consent while alive.
Families want to ask for compensations from the state, EUR 1 million on average.
