Belgium fears that unvaccinated Romanians who’ll go for fruit picking will rise the number of Covid infections

Belgian authorities fear that Romanians who go to this country to pick vegetables and fruits – mostly unvaccinated – could increase the number of COVID-19 cases and have asked the Romanian authorities to inform them on the health measures they must comply with, Interior Minister Lucian Bode said on Thursday.

In his videoconference with the prefects, the Minister of Interior sent a message to the authorities from Bacău, Botoşani, Suceava and Neamţ counties, asking them to get involved in the case of Romanians who will go to work abroad.

“On December 15, you received a radiogram, a message about Romanian citizens, seasonal workers in the field of harvesting vegetables and fruit grown in greenhouses, who are going to go to work in the farms in Belgium. You know very well that the Belgian authorities consider that these Romanian citizens, mostly unvaccinated, will probably come into direct contact with the population in the area, which may have the effect of increasing the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.  They asked us to carry out an information campaign regarding the sanitary measures that the Romanians will have to respect in Belgium and the vaccination recommendation,” the minister stated, asking the four prefects to tell him what measures they had taken since 15 December at the request of the Belgian authorities.
