Big museums will be closed on “Museum Night” in protest

Museum Night this year will see museums closed in several cities across the country. Some of the institutions have announced that they will not take part in the event in protest. The employees have several complaints, including the wages that are too low.

For example, in Bucharest, among others, the Bucharest Municipal Museum, the National Museum of History, the Museum of Art, as well as the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History, where huge queues used to form in past years, will not be open.

The Bucharest City Museum announced on Wednesday that it stands in solidarity with the legitimate demands of the museum sector regarding the salary increase of employees in the field and will not participate in this year’s edition of the Night of the Museums.

“The initial intention of the MMB was to participate, as happened every year by mobilizing all internal and external resources, and the museums within the MMB structure were even enrolled in the Night of Museums. But it is necessary for the museum sector to regain its dignity on the measure of its value and contribution to the increase in the quality of life of all Romanians. We see that a decision in this regard is overdue”, according to a message published on the institution’s Facebook.

Solidarity with the demands of those in the museum sector are also the employees of the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History, the National Art Museum of Romania.

The National History Museum of Romania announced that “for objective reasons” it will not organize the Night of the Museums. This year’s edition of the Night of the Museums will be a special one, not because we are marking 20 years of existence, reason for celebration under normal conditions, but because it will probably bring with it the biggest protest of the museums since ’89. For this reason, you will notice that many museums in the country do not appear on the Night of Museums 2024 program, their representatives can be found and supported in Piaţa Victoriei”, wrote Dragoş Neamu, manager of the event, on Facebook.

Museum employees demand a 20% increase in salaries in the museum sector for any professional position, balancing the great inequities and discriminations that exist within the cultural sector.

The National Commission of Museums and Collections conveyed that it respects the decision of a large and representative part of the museums in Romania not to participate this year, “following this unnatural situation”, in the jubilee edition of the Night of the Museums, under the motto “Night in the museums of Romania”.

“Taking note of the major, incorrect, unjustified salary disproportions that have appeared between museographers, researchers, conservators, restorers and the other profile positions in the Ministry of Education’s network, with more than 20-30% higher than those with much greater responsibilities, cultural heritage mobile administered infinitely superior and complexity of the work clearly superior in the museum institutions located in the network of the Ministry of Culture or local authorities, generated by the global and systemically uncorrelated application of the salary regulations in education, the National Commission of Museums and Collections, the specialized scientific body with the role advisory in the field of mobile cultural heritage of the Ministry of Culture, expresses its respect for the decision of a large and representative part of the museums in Romania not to participate this year, as a result of this unnatural situation, in the jubilee edition of the Night of the Museums, under the motto “Night in the museums of Romania”, according to a press release from the National Commission of Museums and Collections.

“As the organization of the Night of the Museums event takes place outside of program hours and is based on the voluntary participation of staff from museum institutions, the approach of colleagues in the field is all the more legitimate. We know that at this moment great efforts are being made to resolve these situations from to all the factors involved and we all hope for the quick adoption of some fair and necessary corrective measures,” the Commission also says.
