Breb wooden church from Maramures, revamped with Prince Charles’ donation

Prince Charles of Wales has donated GBP 5,000 to save the wooden church Breb, Maramures that he visited in 2004, according to Digi24. The four-century-old church, which is also historical monument, will have a new wooden roof in about two weeks, after the rehabilitation made by the local craftsmen with the support of the Ambulance for Monuments.

The NGO’s representative, Eugen Vaida said it is a project of the Monumentum Association that is set to save these endangered monuments in collapse or on the verge of collapse. He says there are over 600 such monuments currently in Romania, with the NGO operating repairing works on 15 of them so far.

Prince Charles’ donation came upon the suggestion of the British writer William Blacker who used to live in Breb for many years.

The church in Breb is well known as “the wooden church with the oldest tower in Romania” dating back in 1530, but also with one of the oldest mural paintings, from 1626.

Locals are helped to revamp the church by 12 volunteers from around the country, who are accommodated by the villagers. The first service in the church will be officiated on St. George’s Day, April 23.

The next church on the list of the Ambulance for Monuments is the one in Dobârca, Sibiu county.
