Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea argued on Wednesday that the municipality cannot fund the victims of domestic violence anymore. Firea claims she has nothing against funding the shelter for victims of domestic violence, coordinated by Anais Association, but the City Hall currently faces a subsistence budget.
“We have a subsistence budget, to say it plainly. We are, many times, at risk of not paying the wages to the institutions subordinated to the City Hall and the Council, so all collaboration projects are stagnating now. We want to have budget. Anyway, it has been heavily cut. Many people rejoiced,” Gabriela Firea said, ziare.com informs.
“Now we will see the consequences, because the City Hall manages all the public services, infrastructure, investments, health, social projects. We don’t want to limit the collaboration with NGOs, but currently we don’t have budget,” she added.
On February 26, the City Hall General Council adopted a draft decision to grant RON 1,500 for the monthly rent for the victims of domestic violence, for the duration of rehabilitation.
The organisations members of the network for preventing and combating violence against women (the VIF network) has requested the City Hall to remedy the situation deriving from the cessation of funding to Anais Association, which offers shelter and counseling to the victims of domestic violence.
