Bucharest is amongst the best cities in Europe for a takeaway lunch, beating neighbouring capitals such as Budapest and Sofia. That’s according to a new index study by Just-eat.fr, which evaluated cities according to their number of suitable restaurants (those providing a lunchtime takeaway menu), average food quality, service, and overall ratings of 4 million restaurants worldwide.

Bucharest is amongst the best cities in Europe for a takeaway lunch
With an overall rating of 4.28/5, Bucharest is the fourth-best European city for a takeaway lunch. Despite not having many restaurant options (only 3.71 per 100,000 people), the city doesn’t disappoint for food and service quality. Out of all the European cities analysed, Bucharest has the sixth-highest score for service rating (4.23/5). Managing the fourth-highest food rating (4.34/5) in Europe, Bucharest not only beats food capitals such as Rome (4.22/5) and Paris (4.19/5), but also neighbouring cities such as Budapest (4.24/5) and Sofia (4.22/5).
The top three European cities for a takeaway lunch
Just-eat.fr can reveal that Prague is the best city for a takeaway lunch in Europe and the second-best in the world. The Czech capital had an overall score of 4.40/5, ahead of neighbouring countries’ capitals, Vienna (4.24/5) and Berlin (4.31/5). The average food rating in Prague is the highest in Europe (4.46/5), beating famous gastronomic cities such as Rome (4.22/5) and Paris (4.19/5). Lunchtime foodies in Prague will not only be spoiled for choice but will also benefit from the second-best takeaway service in Europe (4.34/5 rating), behind only Athens with 4.38/5.
Lisbon comes in second place with an overall rating of 4.33 out of five. Quality over quantity is the order of the day in the Portuguese capital: Lisbon offers only 2.81 takeaway restaurants per 100,000 habitants, the lowest amongst all countries. However, hungry visitors to this colourful city will find the second-best culinary delights in Europe, with a food rating of 4.40/5. This is 5.5% higher than Madrid, scoring just 4.17/5 for food quality.
Athens comes in third place, with an overall rating of 4.30/5. Those in the city can relish the fact that they have the best takeaway service in Europe, with a service rating of 4.38/5. Takeaway lovers in the Greek capital also have the third most delicious lunch grub in Europe, with the food rating in Athens scoring a tasty 4.35/5.
Barcelona comes in tenth place
Perhaps surprisingly, Barcelona only managed to claim tenth place in our list, with an overall rating of 4.22/5. With a food score of 4.26/5, the city takes eleventh spot in terms of culinary prowess. Those looking to have a takeaway lunch whilst walking through Barcelona’s iconic gothic alleys will also be disappointed with the number of choices: the city offers only 6.85 suitable restaurants per 100,000 people – over three times fewer options than Malta, which offers the highest number of venues in Europe at 20.64 per 100,000 people.
Hanoi, in Vietnam, is the world’s best city for a takeaway lunch
With an overall rating (4.47/5), Hanoi, Vietnam, is the best global city for a takeaway lunch. There are 77 suitable takeaway restaurants to choose from in the Asian city, making it another idyllic location to take a midday walk and enjoy a takeaway lunch! The food in Hanoi is also rated at 4.47/5.
