Bucharest kicks off the winter season: Christmas lights are on, and the Christmas Market has opened

The Christmas Market in Constitution Square was opened on Thursday evening, marking the illumination of festive lights in Bucharest. The market in the city center will remain open until the day after Christmas, December 26.

“I am very happy that many Bucharesters have already come this evening, as you can see, it’s full. It’s a market with free access. We are waiting for Bucharesters every day until December 26. There will be concerts. There is Santa’s House. Santa will come on December 15, but until then, he receives letters at Santa’s House. There are other activities for children. There are, as every year, craftsmen selling various things, there is food, both traditional and international. It’s a place where people feel good. We are happy,” said the Mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, present at the opening of the market.

In the Christmas Market in Constitution Square, a 30-meter-high tree is placed on a metal structure adorned with fir branches.

The over 130 Christmas stalls host craftsmen from all regions of the country. They sell hand-painted baubles, ceramic bells, woven wreaths, and other specific decorations and ornaments, icons and wooden objects, traditional costumes, toys, accessories, jewelry, ornaments, and natural cosmetics. “The market also offers traditional flavors and recipes: sweetbread, pies, cakes, and homemade chocolate, sweet cheese pie, jams, but also the favorite sweets of the little ones: gingerbread, lollipops, candies, and jellies. The indispensable Christmas dishes can be tasted in specially arranged gastronomic areas, alongside seasonal hot drinks. From Romanian delights to international specialties, the market promises a flavorful culinary journey,” according to CREART.

The market has two areas dedicated to holiday music. In the traditional area, the audience can listen to Romanian carols and customs, choirs and children’s groups, recitals by instrumental artists, as well as ensembles of minorities and national communities. The second area will be animated by the DJ’s mixes, to the international rhythms of the most famous winter season songs.

The Bucharest Christmas Market will be open daily, from Monday to Friday, between 12:00 PM and 10:00 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Christmas lights turned on

The festive lighting in the capital and the lights in the Christmas Market in Constitution Square were turned on Thursday by three students who won gold medals this year at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Japan. On this occasion, the Mayor of Bucharest, Nicuşor Dan, stated that installations worth 5 million lei were purchased, and the installation cost was approximately 2 million lei.

“We are no longer at the level of 2018-2019 because we are trying to achieve budgetary balance, but much more than last year. Last year we only put up the ones we had purchased, and we paid about two million lei for installation. This year we put about 2 million lei and something on installation and 5 million on purchase, so there will be much more than last year, but we won’t exceed the limit,” said Nicuşor Dan.
