‘Colectiv’ tragedy: ISU received sponsorships from the companies they checked, judge says

The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) received sponsorships from the companies they checked. The information appears in the court’s reasoning for the recent arrest of the two ISU employees. According to judges, the practice was known by their superiors. The Military Tribunal finds it hard to imagine that the companies sponsoring the ISU could have been objectively checked and eventually severely sanctioned, digi24.ro reports.
This is the military judge’s reasoning about the decision that two ISU inspectors were preventively arrested (George Matei Petrica), respectively, placed under house arrest (Antonina Radu). The two were accused of abuse of office related to the controls carried out at the Colectiv nightclub, but not declared to their superiors.
However, the military judge considers it is unlikely that ISU inspectors or a state institution receiving sponsorships from private companies could drastically sanction those companies if they find irregularities.
The owners of the club, heard by the military prosecutors, said they did not give money to the pair when they arrived to check the club. The file includes documents taken from ISU Bucharest showing that a foundation operating within the ISU collected the money coming from the companies checked by the inspectorate’s employees. The sponsorships, says the military judge, have been acknowledged by other ISU employees who have been heard in recent days.
The magistrate stressed that the prosecutors should look carefully at the two ISU employees’ superiors in order to complete the picture of those responsible for the fire at the Colectiv nightclub.
