Criminal complaint against PM Ciolos on “Wisdom of the Earth” acquisition

MPs Sebastian Ghita and Bogdan Diaconu on Friday filed a complaint against PM Dacian Ciolos and several former and current ministers accusing them crimes related to the purchase of Brancusi’s sculpture “Wisdom of the Earth”.

Bogdan Diaconu, chairman of the United Romania Party (PRU) argues the criminal complaint is referring to abuse and fraud. “They pay with the Romanians’ money for a work of art that is part of the national patrimony anyway,” Diaconu stated.

“Prosecutor must start investigations in this mega fraud that could turn into a new National Authority for Property Restitution (ANRP) case. I have precise information, (…) the SRI notifications sent to the Government mentioned very clearly that this work of art cannot be bought from public money, much less that it costs EUR 5 M or EUR 11 M,” Ghita argued.

Bogdan Diaconu added the criminal complaint is against PM Dacian Ciolos, against former Culture minister Vlad Alexandrescu, against Finance minister Anca Dragu (Dogaru called her Anca Dogaru) and against Vasile Oprean, secretary of state with the Culture Ministry for abuse of office and fraud.

The Government approved an emergency ordinance saying that the Romanian state will pay for the famous sculpture to complete the sum od EUR 1 M raised from donations up to the total of EUR 11 M.
