Draft to introduce a new emergency number 114 in public debate

Amid controversies on the authorities’ bad management of the Caracal case, when a 15yo teen girl, Alexandra Macesanu had called 112 three times to announce she had been kidnapped and raped, the Communications Ministry has launched in public debate a draft bill that proposes the introduction of a new emergency number – 114.

According to the draft law, when someone will call 114 the information on the caller’s location will be delivered automatically.

The new 114 emergency number is meant to prompt a quicker intervention of the authorities in emergency situations.

The new emergency number is planned to provide a response to the citizens’ emergencies as promptly as possible, by improving the possibilities to take over and manage the tracking information related to the emergency calls. Practically, the 114 will provide operators with a wider range of information to track the caller.

The personal data collected through the 114 number will be processed in compliance with the GDPR provisions and will be stored for 10 years. After that they will be deleted or destroyed.

In Romania, besides the 112 emergency number, there is also 113 destined for the hearing and speaking-impaired people.
