Dragoş Băsescu sentenced to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment for influence peddling

Dragoş Băsescu, nephew of the former President of Romania Traian Băsescu, was sentenced on Tuesday by the Bucharest Court to two years and six months imprisonment for influence peddling, a decision in first court. The judges also decided to revoke the judicial control on bail.

In late October 2015, the nephew of former President Traian Basescu was indicted by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) for influence peddling, the defender being charged for demanding EUR 1 million from a businessman, promising to intervene to DIICOT to get a favourable solution in a file.

In the same file businessman Ciprian Nistor was accused of complicity to influence peddling, serving a custodial sentence in another file.

According to the indictment, on March 13, 2014, Dragoş Băsescu, together with Nistor Ciprian, requested from a businessman (denouncer in the file) EUR 500,000 for a solution of rejecting the arrest in an appeal filed by DIICOT in a file concerning the latter. He demanded EUR 500,000 more for a favourable solution in that case, and for lifting the seizure decision applied to the informer’s goods.

In support of these claims, the defendant Dragoş Băsescu hinted he has influence on judicial bodies and even promised to intervene as mentioned above.
