Over Half of Romanian Students Want to Emigrate; Most Criticized by Teachers

More than half of the children schooled in Romania (55.1%) want to leave the country and settle abroad, according to a study carried out by the Save the Children Organization, published on September 5, 2024. Among the reasons are better educational opportunities abroad (26.3%), dissatisfaction with living conditions in Romania (21.9%), bullying and being scolded by teachers.

One out of three Romanian students would like to study abroad, because they no longer trust that the school in Romania prepares them for the future, according to the cited source. 10 years ago, students believed that lessons would be useful and that school would help them discover what they like. Now, only a third of them still believe this. In addition, students believe that the school schedule is too busy and does not leave them time to relax and develop their passions.

The survey carried out by Save the Children, at the end of 2022, was done on a sample of 4,500 middle school and high school children. Of these, more than 70% said they felt happy at school, and more than 20% said they were indifferent.

As the children grow, the happiness decreases, while the difference and tension increases. If 82% of primary school students declared themselves happy at school, the percentage fell below 70% in the case of high school students. Strain increased from 6% in grades I-IV to 16% among teenagers.

Bullying and the relationship between students and teachers were also mentioned as problems in the Save the Children survey. Thus, 5% of students said that they are beaten by teachers, 22% that they are offended and 76% that they are scolded when they make a mistake.

The problem of bullying in schools in Romania was reported by almost 82% of students, who say they witnessed bullying situations, while 28% frequently witnessed such an episode.

The government should increase the budget for Education. There are a lot of political opportunities here for any party. On the other hand, the Students should be aware of the risks abroad. See what is happening in the USA. Do they want to become martyrs abroad or fight in their homeland for better conditions
