EU finances the Metro Line 5 in Bucharest

The European Commission has Okayed on Tuesday the financing worth EUR 251.8 million from the Cohesion Fund to finance the extension of the Metro Line 5 in Bucharest.

Thanks to the European Union, Bucharest will have a modern metro networking. This will have a positive impact on the city’s air quality, on the local companies, tourism and of course, on the residents,” European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu said.

When concluded, the new subway section will link western Bucharest to the center, from Raul Doamnei to Eroilor station, where lines 1 and 3 also connect. A ride on the metro line 5 will last less than a quarter of hour.

The new metro line 5 will be 7 km long, 10 new stations and a depot.

Over 64,000 Bucharesters will benefit of the new metro line. Construction works are scheduled for completion in June 2018.

The M5 line of the Bucharest Metro will serve the residents of the Drumul Tabarei and Iancului neighborhoods. The dead end stations will be Ghencea in Drumul Taberei and Antilopa in Pantelimon.

The line is made in three stages, Raul Doamnei-Eroilor 2 in the first stage, Eroilor 2-Iancului in the second stage, while the third stage, Iancului-Pantelimon will be ready only in 2030, as the construction works are aggravated by the fact that there are tram lines on this route.
