Ex-mayor of Bucharest Sorin Oprescu, sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in prison

Bucharest Tribunal has sentenced former mayor of Bucharest Sorin Oprescu to five years and four months in prison in the file where he is investigated for corruption deeds. The ruling is not final and can be challenged in another court.

However, due to a judge’s error, the magistrates announced on Monday that Oprescu had been sentenced to four year and four months in jail, but the mistake has been corrected on Tuesday.

Oprescu has been sentenced to 4 years for bribe taking, to one year for setting up an organised crime group and to three years for abuse of abuse. He has been acquitted for money laundering.

So, a raise of one third of the other sentences (meaning 1 year and 4 months) should have been added to the higher sentence (4 years), so the final conviction should have been 5 years and 4 months in jail.

Prosecutors have also asked in this case that extended seizure should be enforced against Oprescu’s lover, Roxana Nica, yet the magistrates of the Bucharest Tribunal ruled that seizure applied on Nica’s house in Bucharest should be raised.
Anti-corruption prosecutors sent Sorin Oprescu to court in November 2015 for bribe taking, money laundering, abuse of office and setting up an organised criminal group.
Oprescu had been detained in this case on September 2015 and suspended from the mayor’s office.
