Ex-president Ion Iliescu admitted to intensive care

Former Romanian president Ion Iliescu, aged 85, was admitted to intensive care at the “Prof. Dr. Agrippa Ionescu” Emergency Clinical Hospital (the Romanian Intelligence Service’s hospital) in the capital. SRI representatives reported that the former president of Romania presented himself to the hospital on Monday, with respiratory problems.

Ion Iliescu presented himself to the hospital with an altered general condition due to respiratory problems, according to hospital representatives.

“Yesterday afternoon, 9.06.2025, Ion Iliescu, former president of Romania, presented himself, at his request, to the Prof. Dr. Agrippa Ionescu Emergency Clinical Hospital in Bucharest for some investigations. The patient presented himself with an altered general condition due to previously started respiratory symptoms. He was admitted and is currently receiving specialized medical care, in parallel with the diagnostic procedures,” SRI reported.

The former president is undergoing several investigations, according to Digi24 sources. This is not the first time that Ion Iliescu has been admitted to hospitals in the capital. He also needed several heart surgeries and several stents were installed over time.
