Relu Fenechiu, former Liberal minister of Transports, currently serving jail time for corruption, signed an agreement with the DNA prosecutors to admit charges against him. More precisely, the former minister admits influence peddling and money laundering charges against him, committed during his deputy term.
Practically, the agreement with the DNA prosecutors would cut Fenechiu’s prison time and he is to serve only three years and ten months in 5 years, provided that judges agree this move.
“During 2012-2014, defendant Relu Fenechiu, pretended and received from a software company 15% from the value of several contracts promoted by the Justice Ministry (worth almost RON 14 M) and by a pharmaceutical company having the Health Ministry as majority stockholder (worth RON 8 M) in exchange for the former minister’s support in winning and furthe developping these projects. More precisely, Fenechiu interceded with the employees of the Justice Ministry and with the managers of the pharma company,” prosecutors say.
In exchange, the former Liberal minister would have received from the software company, through two companies he owned, over EUR 900,000.
Fenechiu has been given a final ruling in January 2014, when he was sentenced to five years in prison, while his brother, Lucian Fenechiu was also sentenced to five years in prison in the file, also known as “ The transformer” file. He is currently imprisonned at the Vaslui Penitentiary.
After the final sentence he resigned from the National Liberal Party, after a 18-year membership and three mandates of deputy.
