A fire broke out at noon on Tuesday at the Palace of Parliament, in the entrance area for visitors to the Chamber of Deputies. “The fire took place in the access area for visitors, level S2. Firefighters were in the building and intervened immediately, so at this point the outbreak was extinguished. The competent institutions will rule on the cause of the fire”, according to an announcement by the Chamber of Deputies.

The Capital Police stated in a statement that “from the first investigations it was established that, following a spontaneous conflict, a man, a visitor, allegedly threw a flammable substance” in the Palace of the Parliament. The fire was in a room for visitors, approximately 300 people were evacuated at that time,” the Capital Police stated in the statement.
According to Digi24, a person threw gasoline at the entrance of visitors to the Chamber of Deputies. A person allegedly entered the courtyard of the Chamber of Deputies and threw gasoline in the visitors’ area, level S2, in the souvenir shop. The employee who was there at the time was doused with gasoline and had a panic attack when she saw the fire.
The attacker managed to run away, but the law enforcement officers were able to identify him after several hours, but they did not catch him until close to midnight.

The man was spotted in the area of Section 11, he will be taken to the Forensic Service to be fingerprinted, then taken to the on-site investigation, in the hotel where he was spotted, and later he will be taken to Section 17, where he will be heard.

“From the first statements given to the police, it appears that this man did not intend to injure any person, the intention was to cause damage to a fundamental institution of the Romanian state. The man did not resist the arrest. He was somewhat surprised that he was spotted so quickly by the police. He was cooperative in terms of immobilization, and in terms of driving to police headquarters. This does not absolve him of the crime he committed, and we are talking here about destruction by arson, a crime punishable by 2 to 7 years in prison. As far as he is concerned, legal measures will be proposed, regardless of the reasons behind the commission of this act”, said Georgian Drăgan, spokesperson of the Romanian Police, in a telephone intervention with Digi24.

Sources within the investigators say that the attacker has been identified. It is about a 56-year-old man from Vaslui. He was caught in a hotel in District 4 in Bucharest.
