First Heatwave Red Alert This Summer: Temperatures close to 40C, including in Bucharest

Meteorologists have issued the first code red for heat wave, thermal discomfort and unbearable heat wave this summer. The heat dome will affect counties in the south of the country on Saturday and Sunday, and the red code will extend to include Bucharest as well.

Yellow, orange and red code warnings for heat wave, heat wave and high thermal discomfort will be in effect for Saturday.

The code yellow alert targets Maramureș, northern Crișana, northern Transylvania on Saturday, a warning that will also extend to Moldova, eastern Muntenia and continental Dobrogea, where maximum temperatures will generally be between 32 and 34 degrees. Thermal discomfort will be high and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will be around the critical threshold of 80 units.

Locally in the mountains, as well as in the western, northern and central regions, from noon, there will be periods of atmospheric instability.

Saturday’s code orange covers the areas of Banat, southern Crișana, most of Transylvania and locally in Oltenia and Muntenia, where much higher temperatures will be recorded for this date. The maximums will generally be between 34 and 37 degrees, there will be heat and intense thermal discomfort, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. Locally, the nights will be tropical, with minimum temperatures around 20 degrees.

On Saturday, the code red will hit Dolj, Olt, Teleorman counties and the south of Vâlcea and Argeș counties, where the heat wave will be intense and persistent, and the temperatures will be particularly high, for the fourth consecutive day. The maximum temperatures will be 38…39 degrees, and the minimum will be around 20 degrees (tropical nights). It will be hot and the thermal discomfort will be especially accentuated, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.

On Sunday, the code red will expand and include the counties of Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ilfov, in the south of the counties of Vâlcea, Argeș and Dâmbovița, as well as the municipality of Bucharest. Here, the heat wave will be intense and persistent, and temperatures will be particularly high, for the fifth day in a row. The maximum temperatures will be 38…39 degrees, and the minimum will be around 20 degrees (tropical nights). It will be hot and the thermal discomfort will be especially accentuated, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. At the beginning of next week the heat wave will narrow to the southern regions.
