Five Romanian soldiers have been wounded in Afghanistan on Friday.
They are soldiers from the 300th Battalion ‘Saint Andrew’ Force Protection, who were carrying out a joint patrol mission together with US military in the area of responsibility, the Defence Ministry informs in a press release.
During the mission, the MRAP combat vehicle in which the soldiers were patrolling was attacked by an improvised explosive device around 12:30h (Romania time).
The military received first aid and were evacuated by air at the ROL III Military Hospital in Kandahar Air Base, the quoted source reads.
The five military are conscious and in stable condition.
The wounded military are: Sergeant Marian Rusu, Class II Corporals Florin Anton and Florin-Alexandru Stefan, Class III Corporal Petrica Apetroaie and Soldier Nicolae Petcu.
This is the second such incident in May. Two other Romanian soldiers were injured in Afghanistan on May 6. And on April 13, four Romanian soldiers were wounded on mission in Afghanistan.
President Iohannis conveys message
President Klaus Iohannis has conveyed a message on Friday, following the attack in Afghanistan that resulted in the wounding of five Romanian soldiers.
“I stand beside our soldiers wounded today in Afghanistan, during a specific mission in the operation theatre together with US military.
In these difficult moments, I wish our military quick recovery and I assure their families that they will receive the best medical care.
We owe to Romanian military full gratitude for serving their country with professionalism and dedication in conflict areas, as they put their lives at risk to maintain international peace and security,” the President’s message reads.
