Foreign Ministry warns over high risk of wildfires in Greece, including across resorts

The Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) announced that the risk of wildfires is still high in several Greek regions starting on Monday, level 4 of 5, with several islands being targeted: Evia, Skyros, Lesvos, Chios, Kythira and the Peloponnese.

MAE informs the Romanian citizens who travel to Greece over the high risk of fires, which is maintained at a high level, 4 out of 5, starting Monday, August 20. The targeted regions already affected by fires are: Evia and Skyros islands, Attica Peninsula,  Viotia region, northern Aegean Sea (Lesvos and Chios islands), the Ionian Islands (Kythira) and the Peloponnese (Corinth, Argolida and Lakonia islands),” reads a press release.

The ministry added the resorts on these islands are also targeted.

A week ago, locals from two villages on Evia Island were evacuated due to a wildfire aggravated by the strong winds in the area. It was a precautionary measure after 94 people died due to the wildfires in Greece this summer. Over 3,500 houses were affected by fires, while 1,000 of them must be demolished as they were completely destroyed.
