Former National Integrity Agency (ANI) head, Horia Georgescu, was sentenced on Wednesday by the Bucharest Court of Appeals to 4 years imprisonment, with execution, in the file on compensation from the National Property Retrocession Agency (ANRP).
According to the court’s decision, out of the four years of imprisonment, the period during which Georgescu was remanded, namely during March 18, 2015 – July 9, 2015, will be counted out. In addition, Horia Georgescu is not allowed to occupy a public office for a period five years after serving the sentence.
In the same file, former deputy Cătălin Theodor Nicolescu was sentenced to 9 years and 4 months imprisonment, and former UDMR deputy Marko Attila-Gabor (under international pursuit) was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment with execution.
The decision is not final and can be appealed.
On March 18, 2015, the Supreme Court has ruled that the former ANI head Horia Georgescu be placed under arrest for 30 days, in the file he is accused, along with other former members of ANRP, of overrated compensations for property by approximately EUR 75 million.
The court ruled the arrest of Horia Georgescu and Remus’s Mihnea-Iuoras, Ingrid Popa Mocanu and Constantin Catalin Canangiu alongside with the evaluators – Gheorghe Visoiu and Alexandru-Florin Hanu.
The head of the National Integrity Agency (ANI), Horia Georgescu, was brought by warrant to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) to be heard by prosecutors in connection with the National Property Retrocession Agency (ANRP). He was later on placed under preventive arrest.
