Octavian Ursu, the Romanian-born mayor of the Germany city of Görlitz, has been the target of extremely violent attacks launched on the social media, with the German Police kicking off a wide investigation and providing special protection measures to the mayor.
A spokesperson of the Prosecutor’s Office has told MDR that Octavian Ursu had received extremely serious threats on social media. Investigators have identified three suspects so far, from Saxony and Brandenburg.
Judiciary authorities have placed the Romanian-born mayor under the state protection until the investigation is complete.
Although he did not reveal the content of the threatening messages, Octavian Ursu has called on the social media owners to take measures against those who launch messages that incite to hatred and violence.
Octavian Ursu, Romanian-born settled in Germany, was elected in mid-June as mayor general of Görlitz, Saxony, eastern Germany, defeating the right-wing AfD representative, Sebastian Wippel, by a vote of 55.2% to 44.8%.
Last year, the German Police have reported almost 1,500 politically-originated threatening messages, with over 1,100 of them being assigned to the right-wing extremists.
