The Government agreed on Saturday on a mechanism to increase the prizes awarded to all medallist athletes. The decision has been taken following talks with the sportsmen’s representatives.
“Following the meeting with the sportsmen, we consider settling a mechanism that would increase the prizes on well established criteria. It’s clear that we must enforce this mechanism in the view of the Olympiad in 2016,” the Government’s spokesperson, Dan Suciu said.
He also stated the Sports Ministry has the necessary funds and that the money that would be allotted are not very big, and they must be “weighed and offered with responsibility”.
The Gov’t decision comes after a week ago gymnast Marian Dragulescu, silver medallist on vault at the World Championships in Glasgow, said he is unhappy that the Government supplemented only the prizes awarded to the women’s handball team which has won the bronze medal at the World Championship in Denmark, but not the other medallists in 2015.
