Gov’t want to disclose Defense Ministry’s documents for the miners’ riot file

The Government has drafted a resolution to disclose more documents released by the Defense Ministry related to the miners’ riot in June 1990. The Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the events 27 years ago, has required it.

“Considering the criminal record no 47/2014, the Military Prosecutor’s Offices Section within the Prosecutor’s Office upon the High Court of Cassation and Justice, which is investigating the case, has asked for the state secret classified information that had been released by the Defense Ministry in June 1990, to be disclosed (…) as their disclosure cannot prejudice the national safety of the country or the interests of the public or private persons,” reads the Prosecutor’s Office’s note.

Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu and former PM Petre Roman, former director of the Romanian Intelligence Service Virgil Magureanu and others have been indicted in the case of the June 1990 miners riot.

Military prosecutors say there is evidence that these defendants would have directly organized and coordinated the attack against the civil population, which claimed four lives (four people have been shot to death) and left another three injured. 1,269 people had their psychical and physical integrity harmed, while another 1,242 have been detained.
