Hacker ‘Guccifer’ brought to Romania from the US

Romanian hacker Marcel Lehel Lazăr, known as ‘Guccifer’ was brought from the United States to Romania on Tuesday to serve his sentence, ANP sources say.

Sources from the National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) said that ‘Guccifer’ was brought under escort on Henri Coanda Airport in Bucharest, to be imprisoned at a detention facility.

The Romanian hacker was the one who revealed that Hillary Clinton used her personal e-mail account during the term as Secretary of State and was sentenced on September 1, 2016 to 52 months in prison by a court the US state of Virginia, according to the Washington Post.

Marcel Lazar pleaded guilty in May on charges of aggravated identification theft and unauthorised access of a computer.

Lazar, who targeted former Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Bush family, was arrested on hacking charges in Romania in 2014 and sentenced to four years.

He was extradited to the US to face charges in March 2016.

The 44-year-old inadvertently uncovered Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s private email account in 2013 after hacking the account of her former political adviser, Sidney Blumenthal.
