In the last 24 hours, almost 17,000 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Romania, given that fewer tests are performed on weekends. There were also 81 deaths, according to partial data provided by the authorities.

Out of the 81 deaths, 2 were recorded in the 40-49 age group, 5 in the 50-59 age category, 19 in the 60-69 age group, 23 in the 70-79 age group. and 32 in the age group over 80 years. 78 of the registered deaths were of some patients who presented comorbidities, one deceased patient did not present comorbidities, and for 2 deceased patients no comorbidities have been reported so far. Out of a total of 81 patients who died, 66 were unvaccinated and 15 were vaccinated. The vaccinated patients ranged in age from 60-69 to over 80 years. All vaccinated patients who died had comorbidities. No deaths were reported before the reference period.
11,884 Romanians infected with SARS-COV-2 are currently hospitalized, by 724 more than the previous day. 1,102 Covid patients admitted in hospital are in intensive care, more by 37 than Sunday. Among the Covid patients in ICU, 948 were not vaccinated.
Among the total hospitalized Covid patients, 911 are minors, with 26 in intensive care.
Infection rate
The infection rate in Bucharest is increasingly up, close to 33 per 1,000 inhabitants. In early January the Covid incidence rate stood at 1.42 in the Capital. Around Bucharest the highest infection rate, almost 43 per one thousand is in Otopeni, Corbeanca and Tunari.
On Monday, the incidence of COVID-19 cases in Bucharest climbed to 32.75 per one thousand, compared to 30.89 a day ago.
The national infection rate surged to 18.91 per 1,000. Besides Bucharest, the highest infection rates were also reported in Timis and Cluj counties, while the lowest in Mehedinți, Vaslui and Teleorman.
