Italian justice denies extradition for Matteo Politi, the impostor doctor who performed surgeries in Romania

The  rejected the extradition request made by the Romanian judiciary for the fake surgeon Matteo Politi, sentenced in a final ruling, in March, by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to three years and ten months in prison for fraud and falsification of documents, reports the press from Italy.

The Italian court decided on August 30 that the fake cosmetic surgeon will have to serve his sentence for fraud and forgery in Italy, most likely in prison,  Corriere del Veneto reports.

Arrested on August 22 in Marghera, where he had returned to live last December, Politi was released two days later under judicial control, imposed until the expiry of the appeal deadlines.

His lawyer, Giovanni Catanzaro, had asked for the extradition to be stopped and at the same time for him to serve the sentence from Romania in Italy, but with alternative punishments to prison.  The court admitted the request to refuse extradition, but rejected the request for alternative punishment, and the Police have five days to appeal to the Supreme Court against this decision. In his plea, the lawyer insisted that the fake surgeon would have been discriminated against in a non-transparent system in Romania. Politi claimed that he is the victim of a “scam” and a “conspiracy”.

However, the court considered that the sentence established by Bucharest does not reveal any irregularities and is indeed consistent with the crime he was accused of.

We will consider whether we will appeal the decision of the Court of Appeal”, said lawyer Giovanni Catanzaro.

On March 15, Matteo Politi was definitively sentenced by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to three years and ten months in prison.

Matteo Politi was sent to court in January 2020 by the prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office of the 1st District Court for fraud and the unlawful exercise of the doctor’s profession, he was accused of having exercised the doctor’s profession without the right and misleading several people whom he- operated.

According to the prosecutors, starting from March to December 2018, the fake doctor would have operated on 19 patients at the clinic where he worked in Bucharest.

During the same period, the man misled nine people regarding his quality as a specialist in plastic surgery, on whom he operated and received, in return, the sums of 13,880 lei and 10,150 euros.

In September 2018, Politi tricked two other people, namely two doctors, to whom he told them that he would soon be the owner of a clinic, although he knew that this could not happen. The Italian led the two doctors to conclude a service contract with a company, whose administrator he was, collecting the sum of 13,896 lei. The money represented the rent for three months of use of the office in that clinic.
