Heavy Snow and Strong Winds Forecast for Christmas Day

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued today, December 24, several warnings of snowfall, wind and heavy rain valid for the next 24 hours in almost half of the country.

There will be an orange code in the mountains, and a yellow code for strong winds will be in effect in most of the country. Significant rain is expected in the south of the country.

From this morning, from 10:00 until December 25, at 10:00, there is an orange code for heavy snowfall, snow cover and heavy blizzard at altitudes, generally over 1700 m in the Southern Carpathians and locally in the Eastern Carpathians.

The accumulated water quantities will be 30…50 l/sq m. The wind will blow strongly, with gusts of over 90…110 km/h, there will be a strong blizzard, and the snow will be heavy and the visibility will drop below 50 m.

Also, during the same period, there is a yellow code for snowfall and blizzard at altitudes between 800 and 1700 m in most of the mountainous area, where the accumulated water quantities will be 20…25 l/sq m. The wind will intensify, with gusts of over 60…80 km/h, there will be a blizzard, and the snow will be heavy, conditions in which visibility will drop below 100 m. In Timiş County and the lowland area of ​​Caraş-Severin County, in the first part of the day it will temporarily snow blizzard (gusts of 40…50 km/h).

From today, December 24, at 10:00 and until December 25, at 10:00, there is a yellow code for increased wind in Muntenia, Dobrogea, southern Moldova and eastern and southern Transylvania. In these regions, there will be gusts of 50…70 km/h, and on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday (December 24 / 25) isolated gusts of over 80 km/h in eastern Muntenia. Wind intensification will be temporary in the rest of the territory, with speeds of 40…50 km/h.

Also between December 24, 10:00, and December 25, 10:00, there is a yellow code for significant rainfall in Oltenia, most of Muntenia and southern Dobrogea. Here, accumulation will reach 25…40 l/sq m and isolated 50 l/sq m. In the west, center and north of the country, precipitation will be mainly in the form of rain and sleet, and in limited areas there will be frost deposits.

Local blizzard in the Southern Carpathians and in the south of the Eastern Carpathians

Locally, in the Southern Carpathians and in the south of the Eastern Carpathians there will be a blizzard, and snow drifts, conditions in which visibility will drop below 100 m. The wind will intensify, with gusts generally of 60…80 km/h. In Muntenia, Dobrogea, as well as in central and southern Moldova the wind will intensify, with gusts of 50…70 km/h and temporarily of 75…80 km/h in eastern Muntenia and on the coast. During the day of December 25, in the southern and southeastern regions there will be precipitation, predominantly in the form of rain, moderate in quantity (10…20 l/sq m), and in southern Oltenia and southwestern Muntenia, isolated, over 25…30 l/sq m. There will be icy conditions.
