Historian, ex-presidential aide Zoe Petre dies at 77

Romanian historian and former presidential aide in the Emil Constantinescu administration, Zoe Petre, has died on Friday morning.

77-year-old Zoe Petre had been admitted in serious condition at Elias Hospital in Bucharest. She had allegedly suffered a stroke.

Born on August 23, 1940 in Bucharest, Zoe Petre was dean of the History Faculty of the University of Bucharest during 1990-1996 and presidential aide on foreign affairs in the Emil Constatinescu administration during 1996-2000.

She was communication director of Constantinescu’s presidential campaign between 1992-1996. Zoe Petre was founding member and vice-president of the “Popular Action” party, founded by the former president Emil Constantinescu.

She also was an acknowledged publicist, with articles released in magazines specializing in ancient history, culture, philology.

Zoe Petre was member of the Romanian societies of Classical Studies, Historical Sciences, and Anthropology, Association pour l’encouragement des etudes grecques, France.

She was lecturer at the Strasbourg University 1968-1969, Association Professor Eeole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Centre de Recherches Compares sur les Societes anciennes, Paris 1982 and President of the National Committee of South-East European Studies.
