How the Northern Lights Were Seen in the Romanian Sky on the First Day of 2025

On the first day of the year, the Romanian sky was colored by the aurora borealis, with spectacular shades of red and purple. The rare phenomenon, usually found in the northern regions, was visible in several areas of the country, particularly in north-west, but also in south and center, and created a magical atmosphere, offering viewers a memorable start to the year.

The Romanian sky was illuminated by spectacular shades of red and purple, typical of the Northern Lights. Although this phenomenon is more common in areas near the Arctic Circle, this year it brought a special surprise to Romania, and the light show was visible in several areas of the country.

Residents of Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Bihor, Maramureș counties, but also from Constanța or Galați were able to observe the phenomenon usually seen in polar areas. The phenomenon could be observed in several areas of our country thanks to clear skies and favorable weather conditions.
The last time the aurora borealis was seen in the sky in Romania was on October 10, 2024.
NASA announced last year that possible records could be set for geomagnetic storms, which lead to unusually bright auroras.

The aurora borealis, also known as the “northern lights”, is one of the most fascinating natural spectacles on the planet. It occurs due to the interaction between the Sun’s charged particles and the Earth’s atmosphere, creating an impressive light show that fascinates and delights viewers.
