Italy has decided to strengthen its presence in Romania, doubling the number of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft already operating in the Air Policing in Romania, the Italian Embassy in Bucharest announced.
According to the quoted source, with the arrival of 4 more planes at the base from Mihail Kogălniceanu in Constanţa County, the number of Eurofighter planes provided by Task Force Air “Black Storm” rises to 8, which, under the command of Colonel Morgan Lovisa, was involved from the first days of December in defense of the Romanian airspace, strengthening the surveillance activities carried out by the Romanian Air Force, the Romanian aviation.
Eurofighter 2000 planes are at the Romanian base since December 1 last year and the flight crews arrived from four squadrons of the military aviation which, normally, in the country, ensure without interruption the defense of the Italian airspace (4th Squadron from Grosseto , 36th Squadron from Gioia del Colle, 37th Squadron from Trapani and 51st Squadron from Istrana).
For Italy and the Military Aviation, this is the second Air Policing operation in Romania, after the first experience in 2019.
“The Italian detachment has been conducting NATO-led enhanced Air Policing Missions together with the Romanian, German and American Air Forces’ military personnel.
The joint training missions aim at increasing interoperability among the NATO allies, while the joint air policing missions contribute to the enhancement of the reaction and deterrence capacity,” reads a press release by the Romanian Ministry of Defence.
