Justice Minister Tudorel Toader said he will soon announce if he requests or not the dismissal of the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) Chief Prosecutor, Laura Codruta Kovesi, after the checks on the directorate is completed.
Toader told Antena 3 TV Wednesday evening that ‘in his mind’ he has made the decision, a decision that will be made public soon. No precise moment was announced. He mentioned that a possible dismissal of the DNA chief does not belong to him entirely, a certain role is played by President Klaus Iohannis.
“The decision can be made only within the legal framework, shared in this case. The Justice Minister can only conduct an assessment and to propose the dismissal from office or keeping in office. The competencies are shared by the Justice Minister and by the President. I assure you I will complete my competence, in a short or very short time. I can make the decision, it is important to communicate it,” Toader said.
“The ECHR mentions a reasonable term, but it is about causes. I can tell you it will be a short or very short time,” he said about the decision, adding that at the right moment he would invite the media to the Justice Ministry for a press conference.
The parliamentary committee for inquiry of the 2009 presidential election, headed by PSD Deputy Oana Florea, with a majority held by PSD and ALDE, asked the Justice Minister to “make the decisions needed” against the DNA Chief Prosecutor, Laura Codruta Kovesi, charged with violating the oath and ignoring the Constitutional Court decision.
Kovesi was invited repeatedly to attend the committee’s sittings, but turned down the invitation.
On the other hand, in late October, the prosecutors section of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) approved, with notifications, the Judicial Inspectorate’s reports on the DNA, with the conclusion that the activity is efficient. Another check is to be conducted in 6-month time to solve the problems of the 2nd Section.
