Bucharest General Mayor stays in prison after Bucharest Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal against the 30-day preventive arrest in the file where he is charged with taking a 25,000 euros bribe. The ruling is final, so, Sorin Oprescu will have to spend 30 days in the Bucharest Police detention center, where he has been imprisoned since September 6.
At the same time, Oprescu was suspended from office by the Capital prefect, with the general mayor duties to be taken over by one of the deputy mayors. Bucharest mayor Paul Petrovan had 48 hours at hand to decide on the suspension, but he came to a decision few hours after he received the official notice from the court.
Then, Bucharest General Council will have to convene at once to elect an interim mayor between the two deputy mayors of the Capital city: Liberal Cornel Pieptea and Social Democrat Dan Darabont.
