Anti-corruption prosecutors extended prosecution against Bucharest suspended mayor, Sorin Oprescu, for money laundering and setting an organized criminal group. These new charges are adding to the previous ones of bribe taking. Judicial sources told local media that the mayors’ house was seized.
Oprescu’s lawyer, Alexandru Chichiu stated the defence was anticipating the investigations’ extent based on the fact that the anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating the other defendants regarding tax evasion charges.
At the same time, the lawyer revealed that Sorin Oprescu is stabilized from the medical point of view and that he is now ready to give the first statement to the DNA prosecutors.
“I will ask prosecutors to hear Sorin Oprescu next week. A similar hearing has not happened at the prosecutor’s office so far but only in front of the judges. He is medically stable now and we are ready for this matter,” the lawyer mentioned.
Sorin Oprescu was arrested on September 7 and since then he claimed several medical problems. He has been admitted at the University Hospital in Bucharest for 4 days and he also underwent some checks at several state and private hospitals. The suspended mayor also filed several complaints on his right to health being restricted, arguing he cannot follow proper medical treatment in the Bucharest Police arrest center.
