Former DGIPI head, prosecuted for embezzlement

The former head of the Department for Intelligence and Internal Protection (DGIPI), senior Police quaestor Nicolae Gheorghe, is to be prosecuted for complicity to abuse of office, through repeated form and embezzlement, the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) has announced on Monday.
According to a DNA release, Gheorghe is accused of complicity to abuse of office in continued form and two deeds of embezzlement in continued form.
In the same file are prosecuted Gabriel Nicolae Pavel, Police chief commissioner, at the time of the offense Chief of the Legal Service DGIPI, for complicity to abuse of office, if the official has obtained for himself or for others an undue advantage in repeated form, Marian Danut Iacob, chief commissioner, at the time of the deed head of Administration with DGIPI, for embezzlement in repeated form (3 material acts), and Nelu Zarnica, senior police quaestor, at the time of the offense deputy chief DGIPI with the position of undersecretary of state, for embezzlement, in repeated form (2 material acts).
DNA states that in the summer of 2015, Nicolae Gheorghe and Gabriel Pavel, through the drawing up of the documentation related to the procurement of goods from MAI funds, the goods not being used for such activities.
DNA says the damage to the state budget amounts to RON 410,000. During August-October 2015, Nicolae Gheorghe changed the destination of the goods.
The prosecutors say that during 2014-2015 Gheorghe, as secretary of state, repeatedly approved the destination of goods amounting to RON 238,000 for protocol expenditures.
Suspects Zarnica and Iacob made the same moves, bringing damages of some RON 14,500.
The four suspects have been informed about the charges and their legal standing.
