Fugitive Paul of Romania, arrested at home in Paris

Paul-Philippe of Romania, sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison in the case of the restitution of the Baneasa Farm, was arrested at home in Paris on Monday, for the execution of the European arrest warrant issued by the Romanian authorities.

Authorities arrested Paul of Romania on Monday morning, at 05:54, in Paris, following requests addressed by the Romanian authorities to those in France, for the execution of the European arrest warrant issued by the Romanian judicial authorities.

The Braşov Court of Appeal requested the SIRENE Bureau to enter an alert for arrest and surrender, based on the new European arrest warrant, and requested the withdrawal of the old one.

The sources cited state that the procedure for executing the European arrest warrant issued by Romania is currently underway.

Prince Paul, 77, fled Romania in 2020 and settled in Paris after being found guilty of illegally returning real estate near Bucharest, over which authorities said he had falsely claimed ownership. He was sentenced in Romania to three years and four months in prison, but his lawyers argued that the criminal charges against him were politically motivated and that their client was being politically persecuted.

Prince Paul was arrested in April 2024 in Malta on the basis of a European arrest warrant and was held in custody for two months until he was granted bail. In August 2024, the request made by Romania and addressed to Malta for the extradition of Prince Paul was rejected by the Court of Appeal of Malta, after it found a “real and personal risk” of violation of his fundamental rights
