Gheorghe Ivan, Oana Hăineală, Augustin Lazar and Codruţ Olaru, candidates for the office of Prosecutor General

The Ministry of Justice has officially announced the candidates for the office of Prosecutor General of Romania: Gheorghe Ivan, Oana Hăineală, Augustin Lazăr and Codruţ Olaru.

Codrut Olaru is prosecutor since 1995. He headed the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism Bacau (2005-2007) and was chief prosecutor of DIICOT (since January 2007). During 1995 to 1999 he was prosecutor with the Prosecutor’s Office upon the Bacau Court, an institution he subsequently headed for a year, until 2000.

Codrut Olaru was DIICOT head for two terms, from 2007 until March 26, 2013, and was later appointed Deputy Prosecutor General of Romania during Tiberiu Nitu’s term.

Another candidate is Augustin Lazar, Prosecutor General with the Prosecutor’s Office upon the Alba Iulia Court of Appeal. “During the Prosecutor’s Office balance sheet, madam Minister asked the Prosecutor Generals in the country to join the race. She used the expression ‘if we care.’ So I joined in,” said Augustin Lazar.

Oana Hăineală, former president of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) has filed on Tuesday her candidacy for Prosecutor General. Oana Hăineală is member of the Superior Council of Magistracy since 2012. She had a mandate of vice-president and a mandate of president. In the council she is the representative of the prosecutor’s offices upon the courts.

The fourth candidate is Gheorghe Ivan, prosecutor with the Prosecutor’s Office upon the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court). He headed the National Anticorruption Directorate, Territorial Service Galaţi during 2008-2013.

The candidates will hold talks with the Minister of Justice during March 18-22.

On March 23, the Minister will submit the proposal to the Superior Council of Magistracy. The Minister of Justice’s proposal to the President of Romania will be forwarded until April 22, 2016.
