Stefan Neanu (36), originally from Romania, was attacked in a small flat on the Phibsboro Road not far from the centre of the suburb on Dublin’s northside at around 10.30pm on Saturday night, independent.ie reports.
The house where he died is just three doors down from where he lived with members of his wider family.
Emergency services were called to the house after the attack and Mr Neanu was taken from the scene by ambulance to the Mater Hospital with apparent stab wounds.
Because of the nature of the injuries, the gardaí were informed and the flat was preserved as a crime scene.
Mr Neanu was later pronounced dead in the early hours of yesterday morning, having lost his life despite efforts by doctors to save him.
A woman in her mid-40s was arrested at the scene in connection with the investigation and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Mountjoy Garda Station.
The has since been released from custody in Mountjoy garda station.
The scene remained preserved yesterday pending a forensic and technical examination and the office of the State Pathologist was notified.
Members of the garda technical bureau arrived at the scene early and began their work gathering forensic evidence.
A woman who described herself as Mr Neanu’s aunt declined to make any comment on the death of her nephew. She was taken by gardaí to identify the body and returned later in a distressed state.
Local Labour TD Joe Costello visited the house yesterday and spoke with gardaí. He said Mr Neanu’s death was a shock and a tragedy for his family and friends.
