Prosecution in Băsescu-Firea case resumed after mediation failed

The prosecution in the Băsescu-Firea case was resumed after mediation failed, the interim Prosecutor General Bogdan Licu told Mediafax on Tuesday.

Prosecution in this case was suspended for three months so that the former president Traian Băsescu and the Social Democrat senator Gabriela Firea could reach an agreement through mediation.

“The law practice that handled the mediation in this case informed us that the mediation had failed,” Licu said, informing that the prosecution will be resumed in this file under the charge of threat.

The row between the former president of Romania and senator Firea started after Traian Băsescu had said he could say about Firea that ‘she is a good journalist, but a calamitous jurist.’ “She had better stay in her place and take care of what is happening on her husband’s domain, where he is mayor (e.n. Firea’a husband is the mayor of Voluntari, Florentin Pandele). She might not find him at home one day, if she is not careful. I see many things happening in his parish,” Băsescu said.

The former president also said that the Social Democrat senator is ‘a blackmailer by trade”. “It’s no attack against a woman, it’s an attack against a blackmailer who pretends to be respected as a Romanian senator, after he graduated from the school of Felix the informer,” Băsescu also stated.

The ex-president also recommended former PM Victor Ponta not to appoint Firea as spokesperson for the elections, as she brings bad luck to the man she says she wants to protect, reminding of Gabriela Firea’s performance as spokesperson of Mugur Isărescu who ran for the presidential elections in 2000.

In retort, Gabriela Firea said she is waiting for the institutions’ and embassies’ reactions to this “gross act of intimidating a senator”.
