Former head of the Romanian intelligence, George Maior, currently ambassador to the U.S. has been heard by the anti-corruption prosecutors in Broidy file regarding former PSD chair Liviu Dragnea’s visit to America in 2017, according to sources.
Maior is heard as a witness in this case.
After the hearing, Maior told journalists that he was being heard at the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) as a witness in a case related to indicted politician Liviu Dragnea’s visit to the US, adding that he had a “very pleasant” discussion with prosecutors.
“I have wanted to come for a long time. [It was] a very pleasant discussion with the prosecutors. The case is pending, so I cannot give you details, but [it was]a very pleasant discussion,” Maior said while leaving DNA.
Asked by journalists if he was involved in organising Dragnea’s and Grindeanu’s visit to the US, Maior replied: “No involvement (…). Mr Dragnea can say anything. The discussion as a witness was very pleasant. Tomorrow I will return to the United States (…). As a witness, you can say a lot about the context of a visit.”
At the end of 2018, the former Social Democrat chairman Dragnea said he had information that there would be a criminal case against him regarding the visit he paid to the U.S. when he attended Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony as U.S. President. The photos released by mass media at that time featured Liviu Dragnea, Donald Trump and former PSD PM Sorin Grindeanu.
Dragnea and Grindeanu would have been invited at the swearing-in ceremony in January 2017 by Elliott Broidy, in his capacity as vice-chair of President Donald Trump’s inaugural committee.
Later on, prosecutors opened an investigation against Broidy and the names of former PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea and of ex-premier Sorin Grindeanu were mentioned in Elliot Broidy’s file.
A famous Republican fundraiser, Broidy is under a federal grand jury’s scrutiny in New York under the charge of influence peddling.
