Sorin Oprescu suspected the Camataru brothers and former chauffeur of helping DNA in investigating him

Former Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu was suspicious and believed, following several information received, that he was targeted by investigators due to the Camataru clan and also due to his former chauffeur Cristia Stanca, aka ‘Grenade’, the DNA documents reveal.
Investigators say, in the quoted documents, that mayor Oprescu had become suspicious and was discussing more often with his accomplice Bogdan Cornel Popa, the director of Cemeteries Administration and Human Crematory with the Bucharest City Hall. Popa had already changed sides and was helping the prosecutors on the investigation, by wearing recording devices during the meetings with Sorin Oprescu.
On September 2, in the evening, Sorin Oprescu had another meeting with Bogdan Popa in his office, to discuss several issues, including his suspicion of being targeted by an investigation. The discussion was recorded by investigators. Oprescu was suspicious on his former chauffeur, but also the Camataru (usurers) clan, with which Cristian Stanca was friend and in-law.
Subsequently, Sorin Oprescu carried out several checking which confirmed his suspicions.
Oprescu was suspended as Bucharest Mayor General on Tuesday, following the final sentence of preventive arrest. The General Council of Bucharest appointed Stefanel Marin (UNPR) to take over the interim office of mayor.
The court ruled for arrest also in the case of Bogdan Cornel Popa and Romeo Albu.
Bodgan Cornel Popa, the director of Cemeteries Administration and Human Crematory with the Bucharest City Hall, allegedly was the one to intermediate the bribe between the companies aiming contracts with public institutions run by him, while the money was divided between himself, Sorin Oprescu and the Economic Director with the City Hall, the investigators say.
Sorin Oprescu has had a very close relationship with Bogdan Popa, to whom he ‘confided’, telling him about Maladin Dumitru, the former head of the Infrastructure Department with the city hall, indicted for corruption deeds, who supposedly asked for money in exchange for keeping his mouth shut, the DNA prosecutors’ documents read.

Oprescu had ‘an atypical close relationship’ with Bogdan Cornel Popa. The latter was invited to receptions to the embassies, to visits abroad

Former mayor Sorin Oprescu had ‘an atypical relationship close relationship’ with Bodgan Cornel Popa, the director of Cemeteries Administration and Human Crematory with the Bucharest City Hall, investigators say. Oprescu took him along to receptions at the embassies and to official visits paid abroad (e.g. to the United States).

According to the documents, Oprescu was accompanied by Bogdan Cornel Popa to celebrations to which he wouldn’t have access otherwise, although it seems there is no logic in taking with him the director of Cemeteries Administration and Human Crematory with the Bucharest City Hall.

According to phone conversations tapped since April 2015, “both Popa Bogdan Cornel and Stanca Cristian had an atypical close relationship with defendant Sorin Oprescu,” the quoted documents read.
