The Tate brothers detained in the second case of human trafficking

Brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were detained for 24 hours on Wednesday evening by DIICOT prosecutors in a new case involving charges of forming an organized criminal group, trafficking in minors, human trafficking, sexual intercourse with a minor, influencing statements and money laundering, reports Digi24.

Attorneys for the Tate brothers said in a brief statement that they had been ordered held for 24 hours, and it remains to be seen whether prosecutors will seek a 30-day pretrial detention or house arrest.

“The Tate brothers were detained for 24 hours. It is the maximum period for which DIICOT can detain a suspect without the approval of a judge. For any preventive measure, such as arrest, judicial review or house arrest, prosecutors must submit a proposal to a judge, who can either accept or reject it. Up to this moment, no proposal has been submitted by the prosecutors”, the representatives of the two said.

The Tate brothers were taken to hearings at DIICOT on Tuesday afternoon. Their lawyer stated that the accusations brought against them cannot be made public.

“Today, 21.08.2024, the prosecutors of the Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism – Central Structure, together with police officers from the Ilfov Organized Crime Service, implemented 4 home search warrants within the Ilfov county and Bucharest municipality, in a criminal case concerning the commission of the crimes of forming an organized criminal group, trafficking in minors, trafficking in persons, sexual intercourse with a minor, influencing statements and money laundering”, according to DIICOT.

The two brothers reacted through their communication team, saying that the allegations “are not yet fully clarified”: DIICOT carried out this morning, 21.08.2024, a search at the residence of the Tate brothers, as part of a search related to a new file. Although the allegations in the search warrant are not yet fully clarified, they include suspicions of human trafficking and money laundering. The brothers’ legal team is present to ensure that all formalities are carried out correctly. Additional information will be provided throughout the day today.”
The Tate brothers, with dual citizenship, British and American, were sent to court in another case on June 20, 2023, being accused of constituting an organized criminal group, for the purpose of recruitment, accommodation and exploitation, by forcing some women to create materials with pornographic content, intended for distribution for a fee on profile sites. From these activities, the defendants would have obtained important sums of money.
The offenses charged against them are the establishment of an organized criminal group, continuous human trafficking, continuous rape (two material acts), illegal access to the computer system, alteration of the integrity of computer data, beating or other violence and instigation to this crime.
On June 16, the magistrates of the Bucharest Court of Appeal admitted the challenge of the DIICOT prosecutors in the case of the Tate brothers and maintained the prohibition not to leave the territory of Romania.
