The 700-old-year medieval fortress in Medias, Sibiu County will be revamped with European money. The investment includes RON 26 million EU funds and RON 17.7 million governmental financing.
Works have to be nailed down on December 31, otherwise they will be continued on the town hall’s expenses.
The walls of the fortress and their ornamental elements will be revamped and consolidated, the same going for the Cutlers’ Bastion (Bastionul Cutitarilor), the Masons’ Tower (Turnul Pietrarilor) and the Wheelers’ Tower (Turnul Rotarilor). The revamping project will also include a new lighting system, improvement of the pedestrians’ spaces and placing of the urban fitting (benches, window boxes, bicycle coasters, noticeboards and ornamental trees.
The project aims to create new 20 permanent jobs, the extension of the touristic events season, 45 parking lots and accommodation of over 56,000 tourists each year.
Medias Fortress was built during 1490-1534 following a decree signed by King Matei Corvin in 1486.
The citadel was over-fortified in the next period, its peak being reached in the 18th century when it numbered 19 towers and bastions, the three main gates having been added to another four secondary gates
In Medias you can also admire the most leaned tower of Romania and second in Europe, after the famous Tower of Pisa (Italy), namely the Trumpeters’ Tower of the Saint Margaret Evangelical Church.
