OECD survey: Less truancy and violence in the Romanian schools, but also less learning material

An international study reveals that Romanian pupils are cribbing less than other pupils in the world. They also have less truancies and are less behind schedule than others, shows TALIS 2013 – The OECD Teaching and Learning International survey. Statistics also point that deterrent aggression and vandalism actions are at a low level in Romanian schools.

TALIS 2013 data show that among all factors defining the atmosphere in the schools around the interviewed countries, truancy and pupils being late for school are by far the most common practices in the countries that took part in this analysis.

According to the survey, being late for school is ranked at 29 percent in Romania, compared to the international average of 52 percent. Truancy is rated for 30 pc in Romania compared to an European average of 39 pc, cheating is rated for 5 pc compared to 13 pc, vandalism actions and thefts- 2 pc compared to 4 pc, verbal aggression and intimidation- 9 pc compared to 16 pc, brutality among pupils- 1 pc compared to 2 pc. In Romania, intimidation or verbal aggression on teachers was rated at 0 pc compared to 3 pc in other countries, the same going for drug and alcohol consumption in schools- 0 pc compared to 1 pc the international average.

The study also shows that 75 percent of the academics in Romania are working in schools that reported the lack of school books, computers or internet access. The countries in Europe that report a better resources situation are Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Poland.

In Romania the average number of pupils in schools in 474 compared to 546 as global average and the average number of pupils in a class is 22 in Romania compared to the international average of 24.

The average number of teachers is 32 in our country, less than 45 in other countries.

TALIS – The OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey is the biggest international survey focused on the educational environment. It covered 34 countries on 5 continents, with Romania taking part in it for the first time, in the second cycle developed during 2011-2013.
